Reviving Gushan: A Transparent Gateway to Maritime Heritage

C.M Chao Architect and Planners Reimagines Historic Fish Market

In the heart of Kaohsiung, the Gushan Fish Market stands as a testament to the city's maritime legacy, now reborn through the visionary work of C.M Chao Architect and Planners. This article delves into the transformation of a century-old market into a modern-day marvel, blending history with contemporary design.

The Gushan Fish Market, once a bustling hub of economic activity, faced the threat of obscurity with the rise of offshore fishing. C.M Chao Architect and Planners, however, saw an opportunity to restore its splendor. By demolishing unsafe structures and enhancing the locale, they have created the Kaohsiung Agricultural and Fishery Products Exhibition and Sales Center. The design draws heavily on nautical themes, with the building's silhouette echoing the shapes of boats and the vast sea beyond its glass façade. This architectural approach not only pays homage to the site's history but also establishes a new landmark for the city.

What sets this project apart is its dedication to preserving the essence of the harbor. The entrance retains its original century-old architecture, allowing visitors to journey through time as they step into the market. The 'transparent box' concept, with its 270-degree sea view, offers a luminous space that transforms from day to night. The building's double-layered glass serves a dual purpose, enhancing energy efficiency while the exterior walls, adorned with fused glass, mimic the undulating waves of the sea.

The renovation of the Gushan Fish Market was a delicate balance between conservation and innovation. Utilizing green building materials such as heat-resistant paint and wind-resistant timber, the project prioritizes sustainability. The Fishery Office, a Dutch-style brick edifice, stands as a focal point within the market, its historical integrity preserved for future generations to admire.

Spanning over 7,000 square meters, the revitalized space has become a beacon of attraction, drawing in crowds that exceed 30,000 visitors in a single day. The site is strategically divided into distinct zones, including the Fishery Office, the market itself, and a public plaza. The design team meticulously planned pedestrian routes to ensure a seamless flow between spaces, enhancing the visitor experience.

The Gushan Fish Market's transformation is more than a mere architectural feat; it's a cultural renaissance. It serves as a crucial link between various urban districts, fostering a cohesive waterfront tourism zone. The project's success lies in its ability to evoke local memories and integrate them into a contemporary context, creating a sense of pride among the residents of Kaohsiung.

Despite facing challenges such as strict building regulations and the need for extensive collaboration with public entities, the project was completed in June 2023. The design team's efforts have not only preserved a piece of history but have also earned the project a Silver A' Design Award in Architecture, Building and Structure Design in 2024. This accolade is a testament to the project's exceptional design and its impact on the community, ensuring that the Gushan Fish Market remains a cherished landmark for years to come.
